Lower House speaker denounces US ambassador’s claim on Israeli control of Arab lands

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Lower House Speaker Mazen Qadi on Monday condemned statements by the US ambassador to Israel, describing them as “illusions” that attempt to justify Israeli control over Arab lands and fuel extremism.

“Such statements are provocative and constitute a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, as well as a serious assault on the sovereignty of states,” Qadi said, during Monday’s session.

He also reiterated that the West Bank and Gaza Strip are Palestinian territories over which Israel holds no sovereignty, stressing that “proposals based on religious narratives undermine prospects for a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.”

Qadi also criticised that these statements came from a representative of a major power that chairs the Peace Council [US], saying they contribute to undermining regional stability and feed extremism and conflict rather than helping contain them.

The Speaker also highlighted the Lower House’s appreciation for the unified stance of Arab and Islamic countries rejecting such statements, and called on the international community to uphold international law and prevent attempts to impose a “fait accompli or legitimise occupation.”

Reiterating Jordan’s firm position, Qadi said, “The House stands resolutely behind His Majesty King Abdullah in defending Jordan’s higher interests and protecting the sovereignty of the nation, which remains steadfast against all ambitions."

"We remember and take pride in the heroism of our armed forces, whose sacrifices have written pages of glory and dignity, serving as eternal testimony that this country will not break and will defend the causes of its nation, foremost among them the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, until they achieve freedom and establish their independent state on their national soil.”

The Foreign Ministry has recently denounced the remarks made by the ambassador, describing them as “reckless and provocative,” and constituting a violation of diplomatic norms, an infringement on the sovereignty of the region’s states and a clear breach of international law and the UN Charter.

It also added that they contradict the declared position of US President Donald Trump, rejecting the annexation of the occupied West Bank.

The statement also underscored the importance of concerted efforts to stabilise Gaza and implement the US president’s plan and UN Security Council Resolution 2803, instead of issuing what he described as" irresponsible and escalatory "statements that carry no legal value or effect.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told Tucker Carlson that he would not object if Israel were to take most of the Middle East, as the Jewish people’s right to the land.

In an interview with conservative commentator Tucker Carlson that aired on Friday, the ambassador said that he believes it would be “fine” if ‘Israel’ claimed all the territory historically described in the Bible as the "Promised Land", a region stretching from the Nile River in Egypt to the Euphrates River in Syria and Iraq
