ACC discusses strengthening economic cooperation with Indonesia

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC) First Vice Chairman, Nabil Khatib, on Wednesday reiterated the chamber’s commitment to enhancing economic and commercial ties with Indonesia and strengthening the presence of Jordan’s private sector in promising Asian markets.

According to a chamber statement, Khatib outlined several priority areas during a virtual meeting with senior officials from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He said that these advantages enable Indonesian investors to establish production projects in Jordan and re-export their goods at "preferential" prices to global markets.

Khatib also called for enhancing religious and medical tourism programmes by including Jordan in the Umrah and Hajj travel routes for Indonesian citizens, examining the possibility of operating charter flights to facilitate the programms.

Khatib pointed to significant opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy, halal food industries and logistics, in addition to exploring the launch of a direct flight between Amman and Jakarta through coordination between airlines in both countries.

Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Emil Arifin, welcomed the initiative and stressed shared interest in expanding economic cooperation, particularly in religious tourism, and in developing joint investment projects in hotels, solar energy and halal products.

He noted that Indonesian cinnamon and spices could entre the Jordanian market, be repackaged in Jordan’s free zones, and re-exported to US and European markets.

ACC Director General Ghaleb Hijazi, underscored the importance of maintaining institutional dialogue and strengthening communication between the two chambers, to ensure that proposed ideas are translated into practical projects.

The two sides agreed on a set of measures to advance economic cooperation, including expediting efforts to sign a free trade agreement or a preferential trade accord, and activating the Jordan–Indonesia Business Council as a permanent platform for dialogue.

They also agreed to prepare for a joint business forum in Amman, expand religious and medical tourism programmes, and facilitate direct linkages between companies in various sectors.

The two parties stressed the need to encourage Indonesian investments in Jordan’s free and development zones, and enhance cooperation in halal food production and other priority economic sectors.
