AMMAN — The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) on Monday launched a media awareness initiative aimed at highlighting the dangers of terrorism and countering media campaigns that incite violence.

The event, held in Amman, was attended by Minister of Government Communications Mohammad Momani and Secretary-General of the Coalition Maj. Gen. Mohammed Bin Saeed Al Moghedi.

As part of the initiative, a three-day workshop titled “The Role of Traditional and Modern Media in Raising Societal Awareness to Prevent Terrorism” would be held in Amman.

The workshop brings together journalists, media professionals, and experts to strengthen the role of media institutions in addressing the spread of extremist ideologies and promoting stability and security in the region.

Momani, who is also the government's official spokesperson, said that the initiative reflects Jordan’s unwavering stance against terrorism and extremism in all forms, adding that the fight against terrorism is a struggle for fundamental human and religious values.

The minister also said, "Jordan has always been at the forefront militarily, intellectually, and in media, making great sacrifices to defend national, regional, and global security.

"Through this initiative and Jordan’s cooperation with Saudi Arabia and the 43 other member countries of the Coalition, we reaffirm our commitment to collective action against extremist ideologies and to fostering a culture of moderation and coexistence."

Mughaidi said, "This initiative underscores the power of media and its impact locally, regionally, and internationally. It launches campaigns to counter extremist discourse and misinformation, raising awareness among media practitioners about the responsibilities of both traditional and digital media.

He also stressed that Jordan, as a founding member of the Coalition, played a pivotal role in addressing regional security challenges, demonstrating the importance of cross-border cooperation against terrorism. "By uniting the media voice of all member states, the Coalition amplifies its collective influence internationally, strengthens societal resilience, and protects populations from extremist ideas," he added.

The workshop addresses several key areas, including the role of traditional media in preventive awareness, the effectiveness of digital media in reaching youth, and the growing role of influencers. Participants would also discuss ways to use media to spread accurate information, counter rumours, expose extremist ideologies, and emphasise professional ethics such as integrity, avoiding incitement, and preventing disinformation. The sessions also explore challenges facing the media, technical, social, and political, and propose innovative solutions to overcome them.

According to the Coalition, the workshop provides a valuable platform for exchanging expertise, unifying media messages, and enhancing cooperation between media institutions, government bodies, and communities to strengthen collective efforts against terrorism.

Since its establishment in 2015, the Coalition has launched a series of initiatives that emphasise the importance of regional and international partnerships in strengthening collective security and protecting societies from extremist narratives.
