AMMAN — Jordan’s electricity consumption surged by 26.6 per cent between 2020 and 2024, rising from 18,400 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to 23,300 GWh, according to data released by the Ministry of Energy.

According to the data, cited by Al Mamlaka TV, residential and government buildings sector accounted for the largest share of electricity demand, recording a 21 per cent increase to 11,014 GWh, nearly 47 per cent of the Kingdom’s total electricity usage.

The commercial sector saw the most significant growth, with consumption climbing by 55 per cent, from 2,584 GWh in 2020 to 4,001 GWh in 2024. This makes it the third-largest consumer of electricity, following the residential and industrial sectors.

Industrial electricity use rose by 35 per cent over the four-year period to reach 4,726 GWh, though the sector’s consumption has remained relatively stable since 2022.

Meanwhile, electricity usage in the agriculture and water pumping sector grew by less than 10 per cent, totaling 3,147 GWh, according to the ministry.

The introduction of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to the national grid in 2022 added a new category of demand, with EV infrastructure consuming 27 GWh in 2024. Electricity use for street lighting remained largely unchanged at approximately 377 GWh.

The Ministry of Energy confirmed it is currently reviewing its strategy for the upcoming 2025–2035 energy sector plan, aiming to accommodate growing demand and evolving usage patterns.
