Heavy rain expected nationwide as JMD issues flood warning

AMMAN — The Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) on Tuesday warned of potential flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, including Aqaba and the Dead Sea, as the Kingdom remains under the influence of an unstable atmospheric condition expected to continue through Wednesday.

The unstable weather pattern will bring heavy rain at times, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, the JMD said.

JMD Director Raed Khattab told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that unstable conditions are forecast to continue on Wednesday, accompanied by a slight fall in temperatures.

Scattered showers are expected across various parts of the Kingdom, turning heavy at times and accompanied by thunderstorms, which will further heighten the risk of flash flood.

He indicated that mild conditions will prevail across most parts of the country on Thursday, whilst remaining warm in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba.

Low-altitude clouds are expected over the northern and central regions, with a chance of light showers in the north and parts of the central region late at night.

Khattab noted that temperatures will fall further slightly on Friday, maintaining mild conditions across most parts of the country and warm weather in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba, with a chance of scattered morning showers in the northern region.

He reiterated warnings against flash floods in low-lying areas and valleys, thunderstorms, hail, and poor horizontal visibility caused by dust storms in desert areas, urging the public to stay clear of valley beds and flood-prone areas, exercise caution whilst driving, and guard against slippery road conditions in areas experiencing rainfall.
