AMMAN — Seven people were martyred and 40 received treatment at government and military hospitals following an attack on a church in the village of Hamoud in Karak Governorate, ministers said on Friday.

Government Communication Minister and Official Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani said that the attack was driven by extremist takfiri ideology, stressing that Jordanian Christians are an integral part of the country’s national fabric and have contributed to its past, present and future.

Speaking at a press conference in Karak, Momani condemned the targeting of innocent people during a condolence gathering, describing it as a heinous crime that could not be justified under any circumstances.

“Any attack against a Jordanian, regardless of religion or belief, is an attack on Jordanian society as a whole,” he said.

Momani emphasised that Christians are deeply rooted in Jordan’s history and national identity.

He added that those responsible for the attack did not represent Jordanian society or its values of coexistence, equal citizenship, mutual respect and human dignity.

He vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice, saying security agencies were pursuing anyone suspected of involvement in planning, carrying out, financing or facilitating the attack. “Those convicted would face the maximum penalties provided for under the law.”

Meanwhile, Health Minister Ibrahim Bdour said seven deaths had been recorded, with two at Karak Public Hospital and five at the military hospital.

Of the 40 people treated at government and military facilities, 14 sought care at Karak Public Hospital and 26 at Prince Ali Military Hospital, Bdour said. Three patients were transferred to the Italian Hospital, where they remained at the time of the announcement.

Two patients were in critical condition at the military hospital, while the remaining patients were reported to be in stable condition, the minister said.

He added that nine patients had been transferred to Prince Ali Military Hospital and three to Karak Government Hospital.

Surgical teams from the Royal Medical Services and the Ministry of Health were dispatched following the incident and were working together at full capacity to treat the injured.
