AMMAN — The Anti-Narcotic Department (AND) on Thursday announced the arrest of three local gangs in Amman and Irbid who were allegedly possessing and trafficking illegal narcotics inside the country, according to police.

 

The three security campaigns targeting the gangs resulted in the arrest of 11 suspects in Amman in two separate incidents and eight men in Irbid, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.

 

Law-enforcement officers also seized 19,000 illicit pills and 7.3 kilogrammes of Hashish that were allegedly found with the suspects, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

 

“The law-enforcement agencies in Jordan have recently expanded their operations and monitoring of suspects who are involved with drug trafficking,” according to the police official.

 

In a simultaneous operation in the capital, Sartawi said “a specialised investigative team monitored 10 suspects and arrested them without any major incident”.

 

“Arresting officers seized 3.2 kilogrammes of Hashish during the simultaneous operation,” Sartawi said.

 

In another drug bust operation in Amman, Sartawi said a suspected drug dealer was arrested by police following a tip that he was allegedly in possession of illicit drugs to provide to other drug dealers in his area.

 

Upon searching his house, the police official maintained, “Officers found 4.1 kilogrammes of Hashish, 14,000 illicit pills and two firearms”.

 

Meanwhile, a special team was tasked with monitoring eight suspects in Irbid. Sartawi said.

 

“The group was arrested by AND agents who found 5,000 Captagon pills in their possession,” he added.

 

All suspects were referred to the State Security Court prosecution office for further questioning and indictment, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate.
