Jordan hosts regional military meeting on border security

AMMAN — The Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army (JAF) hosted a high-level military meeting on Tuesday with senior commanders from Syria, Iraq and Iraq’s Kurdistan Region to discuss regional and border security amid growing security challenges.
 
The meeting brought together Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Maj. Gen. Yousef Ahmed Huneiti, chiefs of staff of the Syrian Iraqi and Iraqi armies and Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, according to a JAF statement.
 
The participants discussed regional and border security, focusing on ways to strengthen military coordination and cooperation in confronting cross-border threats and other security risks.
 
They stressed the importance of maintaining communication and exchanging information and expertise to improve their ability to respond effectively to emerging challenges, the statement said.
 
They also underlined that the region’s evolving security situation requires closer coordination and joint, sustained efforts to protect borders, counter security threats and safeguard the countries’ security and sovereignty, calling for expanding existing military and security cooperation to enhance preparedness and the ability to address both current and future challenges.
 
On the sidelines of the meeting, Huneiti met with the commander of US Central Command and discussed military cooperation and coordination, the latest regional developments, current security challenges, and joint efforts to strengthen regional security and stability.
 
The meeting is part of Jordan’s efforts to strengthen ties with the region’s armed forces and expand channels of military coordination and communication, particularly in addressing shared security challenges and protecting borders, the statement said.
