Jordan drives diplomatic push amid widening regional war

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Jordan has intensified high-level diplomatic efforts to contain a rapidly escalating regional crisis as confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States widens.

On Monday, His Majesty King Abdullah travelled for the UAE for a meeting with President Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. On Tuesday, the King held talks with Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha and with Bahrain King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in Manama.

His Majesty King Abdullah has held 47 phone calls with world leaders since the escalation began. The outreach reflects the urgency of the moment and Jordan’s active role in shaping regional and international responses.

During the calls, the King condemned attacks targeting Jordan and other Arab states, describing them as a “serious escalation and a violation of international law.”

His Majesty stressed that Jordan will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and security, calling for stronger international efforts to de-escalate tensions.

At the same time, Jordan has reinforced its security posture.

The Jordan Armed Forces –Arab Army remain on high alert. They have intercepted aerial threats linked to the ongoing war’s spillover into Jordanian airspace.

The diplomatic push comes as the conflict moves beyond isolated strikes. It is becoming more complex and politically driven.

The escalation follows US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and retaliatory actions by Tehran across the region.

Jordan’s approach combines a firm political stance with sustained diplomatic outreach. The Kingdom is strengthening coordination with regional partners and it continues to reject violations of sovereignty and attacks on Arab states.

This position has been reflected in recent statements.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Ministry condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the ground incursion into the south. It described them as a flagrant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and international law. It warned that continued escalation risks further destabilising the region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has maintained intensive engagement since the start of the war. He has held a series of phone calls and virtual meetings with regional and international counterparts.

In his latest contacts, Safadi met with Egyptian foreign minister and spoke with his counterparts in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Discussions focused on containing the escalation and reinforcing coordination to safeguard regional security and stability.

These efforts complement the broader diplomatic push led by the King.

The war is increasingly shaped by political calculations and the involvement of major powers, particularly the United States.

At the same time, military developments are accelerating, casting doubt on whether diplomacy can keep pace with events on the ground.

Political science professor Areej Jabr said that Jordan is working to contain escalation and stabilise the regional environment.

“Jordan is working to rationalise the war and prevent further escalation, while reinforcing adherence to international law and diplomatic solutions,” she said.

She added that Jordan’s role goes beyond political positioning. It reflects an active and balanced diplomatic approach aimed at strengthening coordination and supporting mediation.

“Jordan’s objective is clear, to push towards de-escalation and a sustainable political solution grounded in international law,” she said.

“But the current trajectory suggests that conflict dynamics are increasingly overriding diplomatic efforts.”

With tensions rising and multiple actors involved, the coming period will test whether diplomatic efforts can contain the crisis.

For now, Jordan appears to be advancing a clear objective: to contain the conflict politically before it expands into a broader regional confrontation
