AMMAN — The Ministry of Interior has said that it is currently conducting a study in coordination with the UNHCR to increase the amount of cash assistance provided for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees from the Zaatari and Azraq camps.

The assistance currently stands at $100 per person, the ministry spokesperson, Abdul Karim Abu Dalu told the public service broadcaster Al Mamlaka.

He said that the government has taken several measures to facilitate the voluntary return process for Syrian refugees.

Among these measures is allowing refugees who do not possess travel documents to leave Jordan using the special service card issued to members of the Syrian community, he said.

The spokesperson added that Syrian refugees choosing to return voluntarily are also permitted to transport their personal furniture to Syria.

He said that 184,827 Syrian refugees voluntarily returned from Jordan to Syria between December 8, 2024, and January 31, 2026.

According to UNHCR data in Jordan, the number of refugees registered with the agency stood at approximately 444,000 by the end of last month. Of these, about 413,000 are Syrian refugees, accounting for 94 percent of the total refugee population in the Kingdom.

UNHCR stressed that return to Syria remains a personal and entirely voluntary decision. The agency emphasized that it does not promote or encourage return, but limits its role to providing information and support to help refugees make informed decisions based on a full understanding of conditions inside Syria.
