AMMAN — The Ministry of Health on Saturday warned of the health repercussions of the dust wave affecting the Kingdom, cautioning that high dust concentrations increase the risk of respiratory problems and eye irritation, particularly among vulnerable groups.
Director of Health Awareness and Media at the ministry Ghaith Owies said that inhaling dust irritates the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, causing severe coughing, sneezing and shortness of breath, in addition to itchy and red eyes, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
Dust exposure may also contribute to skin dryness, he added.
Owies noted that dust waves can exacerbate asthma attacks, sinus infections and other respiratory conditions, particularly among asthma patients, children and the elderly.
He urged citizens to remain indoors as much as possible, especially during peak dust periods, and to ensure that windows and doors are tightly closed.
He also recommended cleaning indoor surfaces regularly with a damp cloth to reduce dust accumulation.
Owies stressed the importance of wearing a properly fitted face mask covering the nose and mouth when going outside, avoiding prolonged outdoor activities and ensuring that asthma patients carry their prescribed inhalers at all times.
Individuals experiencing worsening respiratory symptoms should seek medical attention at the nearest health centre or hospital, he said.
Owies also advised parents to prevent children from playing outdoors during dusty conditions, underscoring that adherence to preventive guidelines helps minimise health complications and protects the most susceptible groups from potential risks.
