Foreign minister reiterates Jordan’s support for UNRWA

 

 

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Tuesday received Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini.
 
Safadi highlighted the significant humanitarian role performed by UNRWA in Gaza, which continues to face a humanitarian catastrophe resulting from the destruction caused by the Israeli aggression and Israel's ongoing restrictions on the entry of sufficient and sustainable aid into the strip, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
 
The foreign minister also emphasised the importance of ensuring the continuity of UNRWA, highlighting its indispensable and irreplaceable role in providing vital services to Palestinian refugees in accordance withe with its UN mandate across its five areas of operation.
 
The minister called for an end to Israel’s systematic campaign to pressure the agency, underlining the necessity of halting illegal restrictions that curb its crucial role within the occupied Palestinian territories.
 
Safadi also commended the extensive efforts exerted by Lazzarini during his tenure as commissioner-general, which concludes on June 30.
 
He expressed Jordan's appreciation for Lazzarini’s humanitarian dedication to supporting Palestinian refugees and serving their cause.
 
Also on Tuesday, Safadi received a phone call from Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.
 
The two ministers discussed the recent escalation in the region, its repercussions on regional and international security, and ways to restore calm through diplomacy, while ensuring the security of the region and respect for the sovereignty of states.
 
Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s full solidarity with the Kingdom.
 
The two ministers also highlighted the strong ties between the two countries and their commitment to deepen cooperation across all fields, in line with the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
 
Also on Tuesday, Safadi received a phone call from Thailand’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sihasak Phuangketkeow.
 
The two ministers discussed the repercussions of the dangerous escalation currently witnessed in the region, alongside prospects for restoring calm and protecting the Middle East from the risk of a wider conflict, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
 
Safadi and Phuangketkeow underscored the vital role of diplomacy in de-escalating tensions and enshrining regional security and stability.
 
The Thai minister also expressed his country's solidarity with the Kingdom.
 
The talks covered bilateral relations, with both top diplomats emphasising the importance of enhancing cooperation across various sectors to serve the mutual interests of the two friendly nations.
