AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Sunday inaugurated Mafraq Park, a 200-dunum public facility adjacent to Al al-Bayt University, and directed the rehabilitation of nearby university sports facilities to expand their use by the local community.

The park, the first of its kind in Mafraq Governorate, was completed within 18 months of the government’s decision to establish it, according to a ministry statement.

Following the inauguration, Hassan inspected the university’s sports facilities and instructed a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to integrate them with the park and make them accessible to local residents, youth and the sports community.

The park includes 10,000 trees planted in early 2026, in line with the government’s strategy to expand green spaces and public parks. It also features 600-metre walking and cycling tracks, parking areas, family seating areas and four sports fields.

Other facilities include an outdoor gym equipped for senior citizens, three large children’s play areas and service facilities monitored by security cameras.

The adjacent university sports complex, which is scheduled for rehabilitation, includes a stadium with spectator stands, a running track and 10 courts for football, basketball, tennis and volleyball.

The park was expanded during the initial construction phase to accommodate a wider range of community activities. It will be open to the public free of charge and managed by the Mafraq Governorate Joint Services Council.

The project is part of a series of recent public-space developments, including Nashama Park in Marj Al Hamam and the Dead Sea Corniche.

During his visit to Mafraq Governorate, Hassan also inaugurated Granada Secondary Mixed School in the Northwestern Badia district as part of a government programme that has seen 86 new schools constructed in less than a year, alongside major classroom and kindergarten expansions.

Granada Secondary School is among 14 schools built in less than a year with support from the private sector through corporate social responsibility initiatives, according to a ministry post on X.

Hassan also inspected Al Hamra Elementary Mixed School in the Husha district of the Northwestern Badia and directed its expansion through the addition of 10 classrooms, rehabilitation of its facilities and yards, and establishment of a science laboratory and kindergarten classrooms.

At the early intervention unit for persons with disabilities in Al Hamra, the prime minister ordered the construction of a new building to replace the unit’s rented premises.

He also instructed that the unit be provided with transportation, educational materials and rehabilitation equipment to serve persons with disabilities in six neighbouring villages in the Northwestern Badia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration Walid Masri, Minister of Youth Raed Adwan, Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khreisat and Al al-Bayt University President Osama Nseir accompanied Hassan during the visit.
