AMMAN — Minister of Government Communication on Tuesday announced a series of Cabinet decisions taken during a session held in Karak.

Speaking at a press conference following the session, Momani, who is also the Government spokesperson, said that the Cabinet approved a financial support package worth nearly JD100 million for public universities to help cover accumulated debts dating back several years.

The measures aim to bolster public universities’ financial stability, ensure continuity of their academic and research missions, and enable resources to be channelled towards the sustainable, qualitative development of programmes, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

As part of the package, the Cabinet approved covering outstanding amounts owed by the Ministry of Education to public universities for the tuition of employees’ children studying at those institutions, totalling JD46 million. The amounts will be settled over the 2026–2028 academic years.

The government will also bear 50 per cent of public universities’ outstanding dues to the Social Security Corporation, amounting to JD47 million, to be paid over the next three years, he added.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved a decision by the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission to exempt public universities from outstanding financial obligations to the commission, estimated at nearly JD24 million.

The support package is conditional on public universities committing to concrete measures to enhance financial discipline, address stagnant and oversaturated majors through the gradual suspension of admissions in programmes with declining demand or weak alignment with labour market needs, and comply with international accreditation requirements, the statement said.

To address damage caused by recent weather depressions, the Cabinet approved proceeding with a new package of rainwater drainage projects for municipalities.

Momani also said that Prime Minister Jafar Hassan had previously instructed relevant agencies to take immediate measures to repair infrastructure damaged by flooding in several areas, particularly in the southern governorates.

The prime minister also directed the Ministry of Finance to allocate JD10 million from the emergency expenditure item to upgrade infrastructure in affected governorates.

In the area of digital protection, the Cabinet approved the formation of a national committee to protect children and adolescents from risks associated with the use of social media platforms and the internet.

The committee will propose necessary measures, coordinate with relevant stakeholders, examine regulatory and technical options for managing children’s access to social media platforms, and assess the most suitable model for implementation in Jordan in terms of effectiveness, cost and technical feasibility, in line with the national legal framework.

The Cabinet also approved a memorandum of understanding between the General Iftaa Department and the Fatwa Centre of the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan to enhance cooperation in religious affairs.
