AMMAN — The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) plans to open two new walkways in the north and south of the capital soon as part of its strategy to expand pedestrian and sports spaces, GAM Construction Department Director Hani Marashdeh said on Friday.

 

Marashdeh told Al Mamlaka TV that the project aims to enhance the quality of life for Amman residents by providing safe outdoor environments for walking and cycling, both along green corridors and within public parks.

 

He noted that the Sixty Street walkway, opened in 2025, stretches over 500 metres and features two separate lanes for walking and cycling designed according to safety and usability standards.

 

Regarding the Abdoun Corridor walkway, Marashdeh emphasised that it is fully separated from the main road, buffered by green spaces from traffic and nearby residential areas, and equipped with dedicated parking lots to ensure pedestrian safety.

 

Addressing complaints about vehicles parking in neighbouring residential streets, Marashdeh said that the provided parking spaces are sufficient, attributing the issue to non-compliance by some visitors.

 

He added that GAM observed misuse of the walkways, such as using them for picnics and gatherings, noting that public parks across the capital are specifically designated for such activities.

 

Marashdeh highlighted that GAM recently opened several walkways, including the Al Rehab Street walkway six months ago and another inside the Al Nashama Park, stressing that work continues on new projects to expand walkways across the capital.
