AMMAN — Jordan on Wednesday renewed its condemnation of attacks targeting the Kingdom and Arab Gulf states, describing them as unjustified assaults and a "blatant" violation of international law and state sovereignty.
Speaking before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Permanent Representative of Jordan to the UN Office at Geneva Akram Harahsheh said the Kingdom stands in full solidarity with Arab and Islamic countries and supports all measures aimed at safeguarding their security, stability and citizens, according to the Jordan News Agency.
Harahsheh said that since February 28, the Jordan Armed Forces - Arab Army has intercepted more than 240 Iranian missiles and drones launched toward Jordanian territory and dealt with over 414 falling projectiles, leaving 24 civilians injured.
He welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, introduced by Jordan and Gulf Cooperation Council states, describing it as a significant step reflecting international consensus in condemning the attacks and rejecting violations of the sovereignty of Arab states.
Harahsheh stressed the need to halt the attacks, restore calm and prevent further escalation, underscoring diplomacy and dialogue as essential to achieving regional stability and collective security.
He also called on the council to express solidarity with affected countries and adopt a draft resolution by consensus, reaffirming the universality of human rights in the face of attacks against sovereign states not party to armed conflict.
Expressing appreciation for convening the session to address the repercussions of the attacks, he thanked the council and Bahrain for requesting the meeting on behalf of concerned states.
He noted that the session comes amid the scale and continued nature of Iranian attacks and its wide-ranging human rights implications, particularly regarding the rights to life, health and an adequate standard of living.
Meanwhile, the UAE representative said Iran is defying the international community and attempting to justify its actions, describing them as reckless behaviour that undermines the international order.
Saudi Arabia’s representative said the attacks constitute a clear violation of international law, noting that Gulf States are not party to the ongoing conflict.
For its part, Qatar said the strikes are indiscriminate and target civilians and service facilities, reaffirming Gulf States’ right to defend their territories.
