AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned the storming of Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif by Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, as well as the continued incursions by extremist groups under the protection of Israeli occupation authorities.
A ministry statement described the incident as a "blatant" violation of the legal and historical status quo at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, a desecration of its sanctity, and an unacceptable provocation.
"Israel has no sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites", the ministry affirmed.
Fuad Majali, the ministry's spokesperson, reiterated Jordan’s firm condemnation and rejection of the repeated incursions by the "extremist" minister and settlers, saying such acts, facilitated by the occupation authorities, constitute a clear breach of international law and international humanitarian law.
Majali warned that these actions seek to impose new realities on the ground through attempts to divide Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif temporally and spatially, stressing that such provocations carry dangerous consequences for regional stability.
He called on Israel, as an occupying force, to halt all violations targeting Muslim and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, which reflect the extremist policies of the Israeli government aimed at escalating tensions and enforcing illegal unilateral measures in the occupied West Bank.
Majali reiterated that Al Aqsa Mosque, with its entire 144-dunum area, is a place of worship reserved exclusively for Muslims, and that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department, affiliated with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, remains the sole legal authority responsible for managing the site and regulating entry to it.
