King Abdullah’s meetings in China: Towards a partnership in politics, production, and technology

The Jordan Times

The state visit by His Majesty King Abdullah to China holds special significance in the trajectory of Jordanian-Chinese relations. It goes beyond merely reaffirming the strong political friendship between the two nations; rather, it reflects a practical drive to elevate these ties to a more comprehensive stage-one grounded in investment, production, technology transfer, and the establishment of sustainable partnerships. Meetings held by His Majesty demonstrate that Jordan views China as a strategic partner capable of contributing to development and opening new horizons for the national economy.

The visit’s itinerary-spanning Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing-reveals a carefully planned agenda that combines political engagement with outreach to China’s economic and technological hubs. The selection of these cities reflects Jordan’s clear desire to leverage China’s advanced experiences while simultaneously showcasing Jordan’s own political stability, attractive business environment, and strategic geographic location-which links Asia to Arab, regional, and international markets.

In Shanghai, His Majesty met with CEOs of major companies operating in the pharmaceutical, food, engineering, agricultural, and aviation sectors. He highlighted the investment opportunities Jordan offers, as well as its qualified human capital and the trade agreements that enable products manufactured in the Kingdom to access vast markets. These meetings convey a significant economic message: the Kingdom seeks not merely to increase the volume of trade, but to attract Chinese investments that establish production lines and value-added projects-initiatives that create jobs, boost exports, and facilitate the transfer of industrial know-how.

His Majesty’s visit to AgiBot, a company specializing in robotics manufacturing, gave a practical dimension to the technological aspect of the trip. He emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration between the company and Jordanian universities and institutions to develop robotics applications and exchange expertise. This approach marks a crucial step toward linking higher education with the digital economy and future industries; it enables Jordanian universities to shift from being mere recipients of technology to active participants in its development, while opening new horizons for young people in fields such as programming, engineering, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing.

The following day, His Majesty met with the Mayor of Shanghai, Gong Zheng, to discuss expanding economic and development partnerships. A visit to the headquarters of the Trip.com Group also held significant implications for Jordan’s tourism sector, addressing ways to increase the number of Chinese tourists, enhance smart marketing for natural and archaeological sites, and integrate cultural heritage into tourism programs. Strengthening air connectivity between the two nations is vital in this context; it serves as a key gateway to transforming Chinese interest in Jordanian destinations-foremost among them Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and the Baptism Site-into a steady flow of tourism that supports local communities and boosts revenue.

The visit to Shenzhen-a leading global hub for innovation—demonstrated a clear focus on technology and the digital economy. During his meeting with Jin Li, the Secretary of the Communist Party of China Committee in the city, His Majesty discussed partnership opportunities, the exchange of expertise, and ways to benefit from Shenzhen’s development experience. He also viewed advanced technologies in robotics, smart air transport, and logistics, and met with corporate leaders to discuss cooperation in research, development, innovation, and digital transformation. These areas align with Jordan’s need for technological solutions that enhance the efficiency of transport, services, and production, while reinforcing the Kingdom’s position as a regional business hub.

In Beijing, the visit took on a broader political and strategic dimension through His Majesty’s meeting with Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. The meeting addressed deepening the strategic partnership and expanding economic cooperation, as well as regional and international developments and preparations for new agreements and memoranda of understanding. This level of dialogue underscores that relations between Amman and Beijing extend beyond economic interests, resting instead on mutual respect, political consultation, and a shared commitment to fostering stability and development.

This political dialogue enables Jordan to present its vision regarding regional issues—foremost among them the Palestinian cause and the need to revive the peace process based on the two-state solution-as well as to support efforts toward de-escalation and the protection of maritime security and international trade. Coordination with Beijing also adds a new dimension to Jordanian diplomacy, leveraging China’s international standing and its permanent membership in the UN Security Council.

His Majesty also held meetings with representatives of companies operating in the energy, minerals, fertilizer, food, and advanced manufacturing sectors-areas directly linked to Jordan’s economic priorities and development security. Discussions focused on manufacturing industries and value-added projects, aiming to utilize Jordanian resources more efficiently. Furthermore, His Majesty discussed with officials from the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) ways to benefit from China’s experience in governance and the development of state-owned enterprises, as well as opportunities for partnerships in strategic sectors.

The outcomes of these meetings demonstrate that Jordan presents itself to China as a stable, reliable partner and a gateway for cooperation with the region, while China represents a vital source of investment, expertise, technology, and markets for Jordan. The Royal vision is grounded in building a balanced relationship that serves the interests of both parties, translating political trust into actionable projects across industry, energy, tourism, the digital economy, and scientific research.

Thus, the visit marks a significant milestone in Jordanian-Chinese relations, paving the way for a transition from traditional cooperation to a long-term partnership focused on production and technology. With the highly anticipated meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang-along with the accompanying agreements and memoranda of understanding still to come, the visit appears poised to open a new chapter in relations centered on joint investment, technology localization, and transforming Jordan into a regional hub for production, services, and innovation.
