AMMAN —The Ministry of Agriculture and Uzbekistan have signed a memorandum of understanding in agricultural scientific research and the exchange of plant and animal genetic materials.

 

The agreement was signed between the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) and Uzbekistan’s Research Institute of Plant Genetic Resources, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Thursday.

 

During a meeting with an Uzbek delegation, Minister of Agriculture Saeb Khreisat stressed that the deal aims to boost cooperation between research centres, support the sustainable use of genetic resources, build research capacity, and advance food security and sustainable agricultural development.

 

The cooperation establishes a foundation for joint research to evaluate target plant species, exchange technical knowledge, and organise scientific visits to tackle shared agricultural challenges.

 

During the meeting, the ministry provided the Uzbek delegation with salt-tolerant grain and vegetable seed samples from the National Seed Bank for use in research programmes.

 

In return, the Uzbek side provided Jordan with seed samples to help localise salt-resistant crop varieties, while the ministry supplied Uzbekistan with Awassi sheep to support livestock genetic improvement programmes.

 

The Uzbek delegates expressed appreciation to the ministry and NARC for facilitating agricultural cooperation between the two countries.
