Kyiv on Tuesday accused Russian forces of targeting a United Nations aid convoy in the partially occupied Kherson region in southern Ukraine, with officials confirming that no casualties were reported.
Oleksandr Brokudin, a local military administration official, said the Russian drone and artillery strike occurred near the town of Bilozerka along the front line.
Brokudin wrote on social media that the “occupiers deliberately targeted UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs trucks with drones and artillery.” The convoy consisted of four vehicles, one of which was destroyed by fire, while another sustained “severe damage.” The remaining two trucks were unharmed.
He also posted a photo showing a white truck bearing the World Food Program logo engulfed in flames and smoke.
International condemnation
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the strike as “another brutal violation of international law, demonstrating Russia’s complete disregard for civilian life and its international obligations.”
The United Nations also condemned the attack, warning that it could constitute a war crime. Matthias Schmale, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, said in a statement: “This type of attack is completely unacceptable. International law protects humanitarian workers, and they must never be targeted.”
Moscow has not responded to the accusations.
Authorities and aid groups in Ukraine have repeatedly reported over the nearly four years of Russia’s invasion that their personnel and facilities have been subjected to Russian attacks.
