Jordan condemns Israeli strike on Damascus, warns Israel over ‘repeated’ attacks on Syria

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday condemned an Israeli drone strike targeting a civilian vehicle in the village of Beit Jinn, in the southwest of Damascus near the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

The ministry described the attack, in a statement, as a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty, security and stability of Syria, and a blatant breach of international law and the UN Charter.”

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Fouad Majali stressed the need to end all “repeated Israeli aggressions and measures targeting Syria's security and stability,” adding that such acts violate the UN Charter and Israel's obligations under the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

He also said that the Israeli attack constitutes a “dangerous and provocative escalation that would only fuel regional conflict and tension.”

Majali called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities by compelling Israel to cease its illegal, provocative attacks against Syria and end its occupation of Syrian lands.

The statement also stressed the necessity of Israel's compliance with international law, resolutions of international legitimacy, respect for state sovereignty, and non-interference in internal affairs.

The spokesperson reiterated the Kingdom’s firm position in support of Syria in rebuilding on foundations that guarantee its unity, sovereignty, security, stability, territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens, preserving the rights of all Syrians.

Syrian state television said that a man was wounded when an "Israeli occupation drone" targeted a vehicle in the village of Beit Jinn, located southwest of Damascus near the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

It published an image of a damaged truck.

Since the December 2024 overthrow of longtime ruler Bashar Al Assad, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria and has sent troops into a UN-patrolled buffer zone that for decades had separated Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan, AFP said.

It has also carried out repeated incursions deeper into Syrian territory and has vowed to keep troops in a so-called "security zone" in southern Syria, where it seeks a broader demilitarised area.

This week Israeli army chief lieutenant general Eyal Zamir told troops in southern Syria that "we are monitoring the changes on the Syrian front. We will not allow hostile forces to establish themselves on our borders."

In Beit Jinn last November, Israeli forces killed 13 Syrians in an operation that they said targeted an Islamist group.
