SSC sentences crystal meth dealers, users to up to five years

AMMAN — In an effort to combat the use of Crystal meth in Jordan, the State Security Court (SSC) has recently issued stiff sentences against dealers and consumers of the illicit substance, a police official said on Thursday.

The tough punishments are part of national efforts to combat Crystal meth trafficking and consumption,” Police Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Amer Sartawi said.

“The SSC issued sentences ranging from three to five years for convicted individuals who were caught consuming or dealing with this deadly substance,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

The fines imposed by the SSC in such cases ranged from JD2,500 to JD5,000, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

Last week, the Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) reiterated its warning to alleged crystal meth users and dealers that its "strict security" campaign against them is ongoing.

Their warning came in the 11th week of its two-month campaign, along with an awareness operation that was initiated by AND in collaboration with the Media and Community Policing Directorate almost two months ago to combat the use of Crystal meth in Jordanian society.

Crystal meth is the common name for crystal methamphetamine, a strong and highly addictive drug that affects the central nervous system, according to WebMD.

The campaigns aim to warn the public about the use of this deadly substance and to pursue individuals who deal in crystal meth.

Sartawi stressed that the “campaign is ongoing until it reaches its goals of spreading awareness and pursuing individuals who deal with this deadly substance”.

Sartawi had recently said that Crystal meth “is one of the most dangerous chemical substances that affects people's mental and physical health”.

“This dangerous substance causes rapid addiction, severe disturbances in perception and behaviour, and affects bodily functions, especially causing damage to the brain and lungs, in addition to aggression, loss of control and perception, and causing many heinous crimes,” Sartawi added.

Citizens are urged to report any person who deals with Crystal meth by contacting 911, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate (PSD).

All information will be treated with utmost discretion, seriousness, firmness, verification, and confidentiality, the PSD statement added.
