Cassation Court upholds eight-year sentences for father, two sons over attempted murder

AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a January 2022 Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a father and his two sons to eight years in prison each after convicting them of attempting to murder a barber in Rusiefeh in June 2020.

The Criminal Court declared the defendants guilty of attempting to murder the barber following a heated argument and handed each defendant 12 years in prison.

Court papers said the defendants engaged in a heated argument with the victim on June 14.

"One of the defendants, the father, pinned the victim to the ground to allow his sons to stab the victim and kill him,” court documents said.

The victim received multiple stab wounds to different parts of his body and was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to court papers.

The victim underwent several surgeries and survived the stabbing incident, the court papers added.

The defendants contested their rulings via their lawyer, arguing that there were “legal errors in the investigation procedures”.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the eight-year sentence against the three defendants.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendants were given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Hammad Ghzawi and Qassem Dughmi.
