AMMAN — Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) Governor Adel Sharkas on Monday said that Syria’s economic recovery and prosperity remain a direct priority for Jordan, given the two countries’ shared economic interests and close ties.

 

Speaking at the opening of the Arab Regional Conference on Supporting Development and Investment in Syria, organised in Amman by the Union of Arab Banks under the theme “Arab Economic and Banking Partnership Towards Supporting Development and Investment in Syria”, Sharkas said supporting Syria’s recovery is a joint Arab responsibility and a mutual interest.

 

A successful recovery in Syria would help revive trade, transport and transit movement, while strengthening market linkages and supply chains across the Arab region, Sharkas said, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

 

He said that Jordan’s banking sector has technical and institutional expertise, as well as an extensive network of banking relationships, that can support cooperation with Syria.

 

Potential areas of cooperation include trade finance, developing payment and remittance channels, exchanging expertise in governance and risk management, and expanding digital financial services within established regulatory frameworks, he added.

 

The two-day conference brings together senior bankers, investors, business owners and representatives of Arab development and financial institutions to explore investment opportunities in the Syrian market.
