Jordan beat Kuwait to reach Arab Cup knockout stage

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — Jordan booked their place in the knockout stage of the FIFA Arab Cup after defeating Kuwait 3–1 at Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium in Doha on Saturday, moving to six points at the top of Group C.

Building on their opening win over the UAE, the Nashama began with high intensity and took an early lead in the 17th minute. Mohannad Abu Taha broke the deadlock with a powerful long-range strike following a short set-piece routine. Two minutes later, Jordan came close to doubling their advantage when Mahmoud Mardi’s effort crashed against the crossbar.

Jordan maintained full control throughout the first half. Abdallah Nasib nearly added a second with a header from a corner, while Kuwait struggled to move out of their defensive shape. The first half closed with Jordan firmly ahead 1–0.

The second half continued in similar fashion, and Saed Rosan made it 2–0 in the 49th minute, capitalising on confusion in the Kuwaiti defence after a corner and firing home from close range.

Jordan thought they had a third through Ali Olwan, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review. Manager Jamal Sellami then opted to rest several key players ahead of the remaining fixtures.

Despite Jordan’s dominance, Kuwait pulled one back against the run of play in the 84th minute when Yousef Nasser headed in their first shot on target, setting up a tense finish. Kuwait threatened an equaliser in stoppage time, but Jordan ultimately secured the win through a late penalty. Olwan converted from the spot in the final minute to seal the victory.

With two wins from two, Jordan sit atop Group C and have guaranteed their place in the last eight. The Nashama will conclude their group-stage campaign on Tuesday against Egypt.
