AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Monday chaired a meeting of the Higher Council for Food Security.

During the meeting, Hassan stressed that the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah over the years have enabled Jordan to build a solid strategic stockpile and achieve significant progress in the agricultural sector.

The prime minister also highlighted the importance of coordination between the government and the private sector to strengthen strategic reserves of essential commodities, maintain stability in local markets, and address potential challenges amid ongoing regional developments.

Hassan also instructed relevant ministries and authorities to monitor markets and prices, prevent monopolistic practices, and strictly enforce the law against violators, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

Council members confirmed that the Kingdom’s stock of essential food commodities, supplies, and raw materials is secure and sufficient for several months.

Agriculture Minister Saeb Khreishat said the ministry has taken steps to ensure market stability and supply sufficient agricultural products, including regulating imports and exports, opening new markets, monitoring stocks and production inputs, and strengthening health inspections of incoming shipments.

Industry, Trade and Supply Minister Yarub Qudah noted that the ministry continuously monitors supply chains, trade, and transportation in coordination with government agencies and the commercial and industrial sectors to ensure the smooth flow of goods.

He highlighted measures to strengthen supply chain resilience, diversify import sources, and monitor stock levels daily.

Qudah added that the Kingdom’s strategic reserves of wheat and barley are secure, with multiple alternatives in place to address any regional developments that may affect trade flows.

Jordan Chamber of Industry President Fathi Jaghbir reiterated the industrial sector’s commitment not to raise prices, noting that factories are operating at full capacity and that local food industries cover around 65 per cent of domestic market needs, with continuous monitoring of stocks and production inputs in coordination with authorities.

The Higher Council for Food Security, chaired by the prime minister, develops food security policies and strategies, coordinates with stakeholders, and provides data to support national efforts.

Its members include key ministers, security and statistics officials, and heads of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Industry, and Farmers’ Union.
