AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday welcomed the unanimous approval by the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), at its 224th session in Paris, of a resolution on the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, listed under “Occupied Palestine”.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Fouad Majali said the resolution affirms that all legislative, administrative and other measures taken by Israel, the occupying power, aimed at altering the character and legal status of Jerusalem are "null and void" and must be rescinded.

“The resolution renewed its call on Israel to stop all illegal measures in the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, which target the city’s outstanding cultural and historical value and place its cultural heritage at risk,” he added.

Majali also reiterated Jordan’s firm position on the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, including Islamic and Christian holy sites, noting that the resolution underscores this position and reaffirms the content of previous Executive Board resolutions as well as those of the World Heritage Committee on Jerusalem.
