European countries, Canada caution citizens from traveling to US

Several European countries, along with Canada, are urging their citizens to adhere strictly to US entry regulations amid increased immigration enforcement under the Trump administration.

Denmark, the UK, Germany, and Finland have revised their travel advisories, following reports of travelers from these nations being detained by US immigration authorities.

"We will enforce visa rules and other conditions of entry," a State Department spokesperson stated. "Prohibiting travel into the United States by those who might pose a threat or violate conditions of their visa is key to protecting the American people."

Germany's Foreign Office recently updated its advisory after reports of several citizens being arrested upon arrival in the US. The guidance emphasizes that entering through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or a visa does not guarantee entry, as US border officials have the final say. Travelers are advised to carry proof of their return trip, such as a plane ticket.

The UK is similarly advising residents to comply with all entry regulations, warning that failure to do so could result in arrest or detention. This advisory follows an incident where a British tourist was detained by ICE at the US-Canada border.

Denmark and Finland have also updated their travel guidelines concerning gender markers on travel documents. Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has highlighted that if a passport's gender does not match the applicant's gender assigned at birth, their visa application may be denied. Denmark's Ministry issued a similar warning, advising travelers with non-binary or X markers to consult the US embassy for guidance.

Canada has joined these countries in revising its travel guidelines, stressing that Canadians and foreign nationals planning to stay in the US for more than 30 days must register with the US government to avoid penalties, fines, or misdemeanor charges.

In previous years, nations have also issued travel warnings related to gun violence in the US. Following a series of mass shootings in 2019, countries like Uruguay and Venezuela cautioned their citizens to take precautions, while Japan advised its citizens to remain vigilant due to the potential for gun violence.
