AMMAN — Jordan on Sunday condemned an attack on the “Al Mayeda” liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat), while sailing in the Arabian Gulf, describing it as a violation of international law and a threat to freedom of maritime navigation.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the need to respect international law, safeguard freedom of navigation and ensure the safety of vessels and their crews.
The ministry warned that targeting energy tankers could have serious repercussions for regional security and stability, the global economy and the environment.
It also reaffirmed Jordan’s solidarity with Qatar and its support for all measures taken by Doha to protect its security, interests and national assets.
For its part, Qatar strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a dangerous act that threatens maritime safety and the security of global energy supplies.
In a statement carried by the Qatar News Agency, the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country reserves the right to take all necessary measures, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, to protect its assets, vessels and crews.
The ministry added that the relevant authorities had launched investigations to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
It also warned that such actions could have serious consequences for regional security and stability and the global economy, particularly given the potential environmental damage caused by attacks on energy carriers.
The statement highlighted the risks to the marine environment and water security in countries across the region.
