Jordan denounces Israeli incursions into Al Aqsa Mosque,’ illegal’ measures in West Bank

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday condemned the ongoing incursions into the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, including the latest intrusion by a member of the Israeli Knesset as a “blatant violation of the legal and historical status of the holy site and a desecration of its sanctity.”

Ministry spokesperson Fouad Majali reiterated Jordan’s “absolute” rejection of the continued incursions by extremist Israeli ministers, Knesset members, and settlers, describing them as “provocative acts aimed at imposing new realities on the holy site and attempting to divide it temporally and spatially.”

Majali warned of the consequences of such violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. He also stressed that Israel has no sovereignty over the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif and that these actions constitute flagrant violations of international law and the historical and legal status of the site.

He also reiterated that the entire 144-dunum Al Aqsa Mosque is exclusively a place of worship for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem Awqaf Department, affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, is the sole legal authority responsible for managing the site and regulating access.

Also on Sunday, the ministry condemned Israeli government measures aimed at annexing occupied Palestinian land, most recently the decision to reclassify land in the occupied West Bank as so-called “state land.”

The ministry said the measures aim to impose “unlawful Israeli sovereignty, entrench settlement expansion, and establish a new legal and administrative reality in the occupied territory, undermining the two-state solution and violating the Palestinian people’s right to an independent, sovereign state along the pre-1967 borders, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital.”

The ministry stressed that Israel holds no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian land.

Majali voiced Jordan’s condemnation and rejection of the unilateral Israeli actions, calling them illegal and invalid, and in clear breach of international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2334, which condemns measures aimed at altering the demographic and legal status of the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.

He also cited the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which affirmed the illegality of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land and the nullity of settlement construction and annexation measures in the West Bank.

Majali warned that the continuation of Israel’s illegal policies would further escalate tensions and violations in the occupied territories, including threats to Islamic and Christian holy sites in East Jerusalem.

He urged the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities by pressuring Israel to halt its escalation in the occupied West Bank and to respect the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state, describing this as the only path to a just and comprehensive peace that guarantees regional security and stability.
