Dutch officials have declared a Van Gogh painting genuine after decades of doubt. The "technical and stylistic analysis" of the painting has confirmed that it was indeed painted by the Dutch master.
The disputed painting is displayed in Norway's National Museum, said officials at the Amsterdam-based Van Gogh Museum on Monday.
The Norway's National Museum has acquired the painting in 1910. Questions about it rose in the 1970s because it is undated and its artistic elements are not close to Van Gogh's style.
It is believed that the painting dates back to 1889. According to the German News Agency, the new investigation kicked off when officials from Oslo Museum asked experts in Amsterdam for their opinion on the authenticity of the painting.
"Based on its aspect, artistic style, elements, and unfamiliar symbols, the experts found that all the doubts that surrounded the painting were baseless", a statement by the museum said.
Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1835 in Groot-Zundert, the Netherlands. He was a post-impressionist painter whose sensational works and unique colors left a remarkable impact on the Western art.
He struggled with mental and psychological problems, and resorted to a psychiatric clinic in France, in late August 1889.
Van Gogh didn't gain popularity and spent his life in poverty. He died from a gunshot at age 37, in France on July 29, 1890.
