AMMAN — The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) announced that fishing of all kinds, both commercial and recreational, will be suspended from Thursday morning until the evening of April 30.
The measure, carried out for the fourth consecutive year, is part of ASEZA’s efforts to preserve fish stocks of native species in the Gulf of Aqaba and protect them during the critical phase of their life cycle when they spawn and reproduce, according to an ASEZA statement.
The decision follows positive results in previous fishing suspension periods, which contributed to a noticeable improvement in fish populations.
ASEZA said that the decision was made in consultation with relevant fishing associations and stakeholders, underlining its commitment to partnership with the local community and balancing marine environmental protection with the sustainable development of this vital sector.
Under the temporary suspension, ASEZA noted that fishing of all native fish species is prohibited in both coastal and deep waters in areas where fishing is normally permitted.
However, licensed fishers (commercial and recreational) and pleasure boats may catch only migratory species during this period.
ASEZA also said that tourist boats and glass-bottom vessels are barred from fishing altogether, and that shoreline fishing by amateurs, visitors and residents is prohibited on all beaches, including within the Aqaba Marine Protected Area.
Also, the use of metal traps and gillnets by licensed commercial and recreational fishers is banned.
Only gear used for bait collection, lines, and hooks are permitted.
ASEZA said that licensed fishers who do not engage in fishing during the closed season will receive monthly compensation of JD400 from the start of the suspension until it ends, reiterating the importance of adhering to the regulations governing fishing and marine environment protection in the Gulf of Aqaba.
