AMMAN — The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development on Tuesday said that secondary education is now defined as a three-year phase covering grades 10, 11 and 12, and that this does not mean the General Exam will be extended over three years.

 

In a statement, the ministry said that secondary education previously covered grades 11 and 12, while grade 10 was part of basic education.

 

Minister of Education and Human Resource Development Azmi Mahafzah has recently said that the traditional Tawjihi exam format has ended, with the General Exam now designated for university admission, while students receive their secondary school certificate after successfully completing grade 12 at school.

 

Mahafzah said “Under the new system, students study core subjects in grades 10 and 11. After passing grade 11, they can sit for the first part of the General Exam, covering Arabic, mathematics, Islamic education and Jordan history, which accounts for 30 per cent of the total score.”

 

Students can postpone these subjects until grade 12, he said, adding that students can select specialised subjects based on their intended university majors in their final year.

 

The minister also said the law defines the General Exam as an assessment of secondary-level curricula for university admission purposes.

 

The secondary school certificate is awarded upon successful completion of grade 12, while the General Exam is used exclusively for higher education admission, Mahafzah said.
