AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Palestinian Vice President Hussein Al Sheikh on Monday discussed developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.

 

The talks, held in Amman, focused on the dangerous deterioration in the occupied West Bank and the consequences of continued Israeli measures, including settler terrorism, settlement expansion and land confiscation, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

 

Safadi and Hussein Al Sheikh condemned the escalation of settler violence against Palestinians and Israel’s continued systematic campaign targeting the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), as well as restrictions imposed on the agency and its institutions in occupied Jerusalem.

 

They also condemned the decision by Israeli authorities to issue tenders for the construction of hundreds of settlement units under the E1 settlement project east of occupied Jerusalem.

 

The two officials also stressed the need to stop Israeli violations in occupied Jerusalem and Israel’s systematic attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo at Islamic and Christian holy sites.

 

They also underscored the importance of implementing the outcomes of the ministerial meeting in support of Jerusalem and its holy sites, hosted by Jordan on August 8.

 

Regarding developments in Gaza, Safadi and Al Sheikh stressed the need to consolidate stability, fully implement US President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan and ensure the unhindered delivery of adequate and sustainable humanitarian aid to the Strip to alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

 

They also called for effective and serious regional and international action to stop illegal Israeli measures that entrench the occupation, undermine prospects for a just peace, push the West Bank towards further escalation and violate international law and international legitimacy resolutions.

 

Safadi and Al-Sheikh stressed that establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state along pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the two-state solution, is the only way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace that guarantees lasting security and stability in the region.

 

The meeting was attended by Fatah Central Committee member and General Intelligence Service Director Maj. Gen. Majed Faraj and Palestinian National Council President Rouhi Fattouh.
