Abbas, Sisi Discuss Recent Developments in Palestinian Cause

Asharq Al-Awsat

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas focused on the challenges and developments in the Palestinian cause during his recent meeting with Egyptian President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi, announced Abbas’ adviser for diplomatic affairs, Majdi Khalidi.

Khalidi said that Abbas briefed Sisi on the latest developments, namely attempts to terminate the Palestinian cause through the US “deal of the century” and Israeli measures.

Abbas arrived in Cairo Saturday for an official visit, during which he met his Egyptian counterpart. He was received at Cairo International Airport by Egyptian Minister of Manpower Mohamed Saffan and Palestine’s Ambassador to Egypt Diab Al-Louh.

The President is also expected to attend the Extraordinary Session of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level on Sunday to discuss the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, held at the request of the PA.

The presidential adviser told state-owned Voice of Palestine radio channel that the meeting also reviewed the role Egypt can play because of its importance in the region, especially that it is the current chair of African Union.

The Union is expected to play an active role, alongside the Arab states, in overcoming the crises facing the Palestinian cause.

Abbas will deliver a speech at the session about the possible measures the leadership intends to take in order to face the risks and challenges resulting from the Israeli occupation and the measures of the US administration, according to the adviser.

Khalidi explained that these measures include the implementation of the decisions of the Palestinian National Council.

In addition, Abbas will discuss with the Arab foreign ministers the activation of the Arab financial safety net to support the Palestinian budget, especially that Israel has been withholding funds allocated for the PA for about two months.

The Arab countries have always stood by the “Palestinian people and supported their steadfastness” however, it is now required “to implement these decisions in order to support the Palestinian position and cause during such difficult times,” Khalidi was quoted by Wafa.

He also asserted that the president will give a speech at the meeting and “speak directly to the foreign ministers, consult with them and listen to their views."

The Palestinian leadership is determined to reach out to the Arab states and a large number of other countries in the world to face the dangers threatening the Palestinian cause, Khalidi noted.

There is an ongoing discussion to set an action plan for the coming period starting with the meeting of Arab foreign ministers, and including several Palestinian delegations that will be sent to different countries carrying messages explaining the risks facing the Palestinian cause.
