Jordan, EU to hold 'first-ever' bilateral summit on Thursday

AMMAN — Jordan and the EU on Thursday will hold their first-ever bilateral summit, bringing together His Majesty King Abdullah with European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The summit, described by officials as a landmark step in Jordan-EU relations, will focus on boosting bilateral ties and expanding political and economic cooperation, building on the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership signed in January 2025, which opens wider avenues for collaboration in areas of shared interest, Al Mamlaka TV reported.

Leaders will also address key regional and international challenges, including developments in the Middle East, as well as security, trade, and migration issues, amid an increasingly complex international environment.

President Costa emphasised Jordan’s role as a strategic EU partner and its pivotal contribution to regional stability, highlighting the EU’s recognition of the Kingdom’s leadership, particularly in hosting Syrian refugees for more than a decade.

The partnership covers five key areas: political relations and regional cooperation, security and defence, economic resilience, trade and investment, human capital and migration, protection and refugee support. It is also supported by a 3 billion euros financial and investment package for 2025–2027.

The Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership builds on a long-standing relationship between the two sides, rooted in the 2002 Partnership Agreement, and aligned with the Jordan–EU Partnership Priorities for 2021–2027.
