AMMAN – Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Minister of Education Azmi Mahafzah on Wednesday honoured the winners of the 17th King Abdullah II Award for Physical Fitness for the 2024–2025 academic year.

The award ceremony was held at Prince Hamzah Hall in Al Hussein Youth City, with a large attendance of school students and educational staff, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Director of the Ministry’s Activities Department Ajmal Tuwayqat said that the award was launched in its first edition in 2005 as a Royal initiative aimed at supporting students across all governorates and regions.

It also strengthens the Ministry of Education’s role in nurturing a well-rounded generation in terms of physical, educational, cognitive, moral, and behavioural development, he added.

Tuwayqat noted that 851,296 students from 3,194 public, private, and military culture schools participated in this year’s award. He stressed that the award is not merely a sports competition but part of a comprehensive vision aimed at raising awareness about the importance of physical activity and health among students.

The award also seeks to instil a love of sports in youth, encourage them to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle, and contribute to discovering and nurturing athletic talent, ultimately elevating Jordan’s profile in regional and international sports arenas.

The event featured performances, formations, and sports routines by students from the Marka, Bani Kenana, Qasabet Amman, and University education directorates, with musical accompaniment from the Public Security Directorate band.
