Jordan’s stance remains unchanged: Safeguard sovereignty and advocate diplomacy - By Hana Namrouqa, The Jordan Times

With missiles and drones flaring in the skies of the region, Jordan finds itself once again caught in a conflict it did not choose. But Jordan’s stance is always clear and strong: It will not be a battleground for any conflict, and its skies will not be a passage for stray drones or missiles that violate its sovereignty.

In response to this serious escalation, His Majesty King Abdullah convened on Saturday a high-level National Security Council meeting to address Israel’s aggression against Iran and the consequences for the region. King Abdullah said the Israeli attack is a violation to international law and an infringement on Iran’s sovereignty.

Reaffirming his commitment to diplomacy, His Majesty said that diplomacy, negotiations and respect for international law are what achieve security and stability. In this spirit, he has been leading intensive diplomatic efforts and communications with world leaders to coordinate regionally and internationally to achieve calm in the region.

In phone calls with world leaders, His Majesty stressed that the current situation requires a collective effort to de-escalate the situation, warning of the dangers of continued Israeli attacks on Iran.

And as the King warned that the Israeli attack against Iran will increase tensions and instability in the region, he once again spoke with resolute of Jordan’s firm stance that it will not be a battleground for any conflict, and will not allow its security, stability and the safety of its citizens to be threatened.

Since Friday morning, the Jordanian Armed Forces intercepted and destroyed multiple flying objects that violated our national airspace. While some debris fell harmlessly in different parts of the country, a flying object struck on Saturday morning a house in the northern Governorate of Irbid, injuring five people, causing property damages and creating panic among people.

Jordan has every right to safeguard its land and airspace against any kind of hostility, and by doing so, the Kingdom is not standing by any side of the conflict but is, first and foremost, protecting civilian safety and national security.

His Majesty’s directives at the National Security Council meeting highlight this point strongly. Joined by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein, King Abdullah directed Prime Minister and Defence Minister Jafar Hassan to ensure the utmost readiness and coordination among state institutions.

Within the Kingdom, the government has demonstrated over the past two days high level of readiness and commitment to keeping Jordanians safe and informed. Authorities issued clear safety instructions and urged the public to heed warnings during these unpredictable times.

The government among its diverse authorities practiced a dual approach, from self-defence at home to continuous advocacy and diplomacy to de-escalate the conflict. This approach that has long set Jordan apart is built on its commitment to regional peace and stability.

In challenging times like these, Jordanians continue to place their trust in their leadership and institutions to steer the country safely through crises, just as they have done for decades. And in these difficult times that Jordan’s stance remains unchanged, as Jordan will always defend its skies and guard its borders, and that the same time continue to advocate for diplomacy and respect for international law to secure a peaceful Middle East.
