AMMAN — The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organisation (JSMO) participated in the 21st General Assembly Meeting and the 31st Board of Directors Meeting of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), held in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, from 26 to 28 October 2026.
The meetings witnessed broad participation from SMIIC member states, alongside representatives of several international and regional organisations concerned with accreditation, standardisation and metrology, according to a statement by JSMO.
The Jordanian delegation was headed by Acting Director General of the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organisation, Wafa Momani, who reaffirmed Jordan's commitment to maintaining an active role in international and regional organisations concerned with standardisation and metrology.
She highlighted Jordan's efforts to strengthen its national quality infrastructure and promote the alignment of Jordanian standards with internationally and regionally recognised standards, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of national products and expanding their access to foreign markets.
Momani explained that Jordan's participation in these meetings provides an important opportunity to contribute to shaping the Institute's strategic directions, decisions, policies, and future work programmes, while ensuring that Jordan's national interests and priorities are taken into consideration.
She also emphasised the importance of supporting the development of technical requirements related to Halal products and services, facilitating the access of Jordanian products to the markets of SMIIC Member States, reducing technical barriers to trade, and strengthening the competitiveness and presence of Jordanian products in regional and international markets.
Jordan's participation is particularly significant in light of the growing role played by SMIIC in developing the Halal industry and product ecosystem, as well as promoting the adoption of relevant standards and technical requirements.
These efforts encompass several sectors, including food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and Halal tourism, all of which are witnessing accelerated growth at both regional and international levels.
During the meetings, participants reviewed the Institute's achievements and followed up on the implementation of its strategic plans. They also approved SMIIC's Implementation Plan for the period (2027–2028), which aims to strengthen intra-Islamic trade and facilitate the smooth flow of goods and products across the markets of Islamic countries.
In addition, progress reports from the Institute's three permanent councils were reviewed: the Standardisation Management Council, the Accreditation Council and the Metrology Council. The Jordanian delegation also participated in the meetings of the Strategic Committee and the Governance Committee.
Discussions focused on the Institute's future strategic directions and their alignment with global developments and emerging trends, in addition to exploring mechanisms for developing its regulatory and legislative frameworks, adopting best governance practices and reinforcing the principles of transparency and institutional accountability.
It is worth noting that Jordan has been an active member of the SMIIC Board of Directors since the Institute's establishment in 2010.
Jordan has consistently earned the confidence of member states, having been elected to the Board for successive terms. This reflects Jordan's standing and its role in supporting joint Islamic cooperation and strengthening collaboration among member states in the fields of standardisation, accreditation and metrology.
