Millions expected to march across US in 'No Kings' protests against Trump

Millions of Americans are expected to take to the streets on Saturday, from New York to San Francisco, to protest the policies of President Donald Trump in a nationwide day of demonstrations organized by the “No Kings” movement.

The movement’s campaign slogan declares, “The president believes his power is absolute. But in America, we have no kings, and we will not surrender to chaos, corruption, and cruelty.”

More than 2,700 marches are planned across major cities and small towns, including near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where he is spending the weekend. Organizers say they anticipate millions of participants, echoing the massive turnout seen in mid-June, when the same coalition, made up of about 300 organizations, led what became the largest protest since the Republican president’s return to the White House.

That earlier day of action coincided with Trump’s 79th birthday, marked by a military parade through the streets of Washington, D.C.

Trump, who in June threatened to respond to demonstrators with “tremendous force,” told Fox News this week, “They call me a king. I’m not a king.”

Republican leaders have denounced the upcoming demonstrations, with some equating them to acts of terrorism. House Speaker Mike Johnson described the marches as “a hate rally against America,” adding, “You’ll see supporters of Hamas and Antifa there,” referring to the left-wing movement that Trump recently designated a terrorist organization.

Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota accused Democrats of “surrendering to the terrorist wing of their party.”

But Democratic lawmakers have defended the movement. “This movement will play a crucial role in America’s future, so I understand why they’re nervous,” said Representative Glenn Ivey of Maryland, who plans to join the marches.

Deirdre Schiefling of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), one of the event’s key organizers, said, “We will not be silenced in the face of abuse of power by Donald Trump and his allies.”

Hollywood actor Robert De Niro also urged Americans to join the protests, appearing in a video calling for a “peaceful uprising” against what he called “King Donald Trump.”

Since returning to power in January, Trump has upended the balance of American democracy, bypassing Congress and state authorities while threatening political opponents with retaliatory legal action. His increasingly combative rhetoric has included deploying military forces to Democratic strongholds under the banner of combating illegal immigration and crime, and urging top military leaders to act against what he called “the enemy within.”

Rallies are also scheduled Saturday in cities where Trump has deployed the National Guard, including Washington and Chicago, as well as in those where he is reportedly planning to do so, such as Boston and New Orleans.

During the previous day of mobilization, several celebrities took part, including actor Mark Ruffalo and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who later temporarily suspended his talk show under pressure from the Trump administration.

Similar demonstrations are also planned in major Canadian cities, including Toronto, Vancouver, and Ottawa.
