AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi held talks in Berlin on Wednesday with German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul that focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional developments.
The two ministers discussed efforts to restore calm in the region following a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, as well as recent negotiations held in Islamabad, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
Safadi stressed the need for a comprehensive solution to end escalating tensions, underscoring the importance of upholding international law, respecting state sovereignty, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in line with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Discussions also covered the worsening situation in Lebanon, with both sides stressing the importance of ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire, including direct talks between Lebanon and Israel facilitated by the United States.
Safadi called for increased coordination to deliver immediate humanitarian aid to support more than one million displaced Lebanese.
He reiterated the need to halt military escalation and support the Lebanese government in asserting control over its territory, strengthening state institutions, and maintaining a monopoly on arms.
On the Palestinian issue, Safadi stressed the urgency of stabilising Gaza, ensuring the full implementation of the US plan, and removing barriers to the delivery of sustained humanitarian assistance.
He also warned against Israeli measures that undermine prospects for a two-state solution, including settlement expansion, land annexation, and restrictions on freedom of worship in Jerusalem’s holy sites.
The talks also addressed developments in Syria, with both ministers stressing the importance of stability and reconstruction, alongside continued international support for Syrian refugees and efforts to enable their voluntary return.
Safadi and Wadephul reaffirmed the strength of Jordanian-German ties and explored opportunities to expand cooperation in key sectors such as water, investment, education, and vocational training, both bilaterally and through the European Union partnership framework.
Safadi expressed appreciation for Germany’s ongoing support for Jordan’s development efforts and its role in helping the Kingdom cope with the impact of regional crises.
The ministers agreed to maintain close coordination to enhance bilateral relations and contribute to regional security and stability.
During his visit, Safadi also met with Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Defence Nils Schmid to discuss regional developments and aspects for deeper cooperation.
Safadi is scheduled to hold meetings with German officials and members of the Bundestag on Thursday.
