AMMAN — Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa stressed Jordan’s firm commitment to supporting the rights of persons with disabilities and promoting inclusive social and economic participation.

Bani Mustafa made her remarks while speaking at the opening of the third edition of the Independent Living for Persons with Disabilities initiative and the Arab Productive Families Exhibition, held on the sidelines of the Doha-hosted Second World Summit on Social Development, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

During the event, organised by the Arab League in cooperation with the Union of Arab Chambers and the Qatar Chamber of Commerce, she said that enhancing inclusion and empowering productive families are key pillars in building a fairer, more sustainable, and inclusive future.

The minister noted that under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, Jordan developed a national model for social development based on empowerment and participation.

She added that the Kingdom was among the first countries to sign and ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and incorporate its principles into national laws and policies.

Bani Mustafa highlighted that achieving full inclusion requires comprehensive policies and societal awareness that celebrate the capabilities of persons with disabilities.

She pointed to the ministry’s partnership with the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in launching the transition model from institutional care to community-based inclusive services, one of the region’s leading applied frameworks.

The initiative, she added, embodies the right to autonomy and provides real opportunities for persons with disabilities to live with dignity and participate in society.

The minister noted that Jordan placed great emphasis on the rights of persons with disabilities, in line with the provisions of the Constitution, under which Law No. 20 of 2017 on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was enacted, serving as the cornerstone of national policies in this field.

She added that, as part of its international commitment to the rights of persons with disabilities, Jordan co-hosted the Third Global Disability Summit with Germany and issued the Amman-Berlin Declaration on the Global Inclusion of Disability Rights and Issues.

The declaration, she said, stands as a key document promoting a human rights-based approach to development and humanitarian action, reaffirming Jordan’s firm commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.
