SSC begins investigation into ‘terrorist’ attack against police officer

The Jordan Times

AMMAN — State Security Court (SSC) Prosecutor Brig. Gen. Ahmad Shahltough on Thursday said his office began investigating the “terrorist” attack against a police officer earlier in the day.

At around noon on Thursday, Corp. Jawad Ali Salayteh was stabbed and killed while on duty in Madina Munawara St. at 12 noon, Police Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Amer Sartawi said.

“Salayteh was taken by surprise by a man who stabbed him with a sharp object,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

A patrol that was stationed in the area intervened and arrested the suspect, the police official added.

One of the patrol officers in charge received an injury in the face, Sartawi said.

The stabbed officer was rushed to a nearby hospital but died shortly after being admitted to hospital, according to Sartawi.

Minister of Government Communication and Government Spokesperson Mohammad Momani on Thursday condemned the attack on a Salaytah, describing it as an assault on the state, the rule of law and all Jordanians.

In a post on X, Momani said that attacking security personnel while performing their duties constitutes an assault on the dignity of the state and its sovereignty.

“We will not tolerate any aggressor or act targeting Jordan and Jordanians,” Momani said, describing Thursday's incident as a “terrorist” attack.

He stressed that the security and stability of the Kingdom remain above all considerations, adding that state institutions are capable of protecting citizens and residents and firmly enforcing the law against anyone who violates it.

Momani said the prime minister was following up on the handling of the incident by the relevant authorities, noting that initial investigations indicate it was a “cowardly terrorist operation”.

The prime minister has instructed the concerned authorities to swiftly establish the circumstances and motives behind the attack and take the necessary legal action against all those involved, Momani added.

He also paid tribute to members of the military and security agencies, saying that sacrifice in the line of duty has long been part of their service to the country.

Momani extended his condolences to the family of the police officer killed in the attack and his colleagues, while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.

“May God have mercy on the martyr of the homeland and preserve Jordan safe and stable,” he said.
