AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry of Foreign Affairs has “strongly” condemned Israeli occupation forces storming of UNRWA in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of occupied Jerusalem.
In a statement on Monday, the ministry described the attack as a “flagrant” violation of international law and of the immunities and privileges of United Nations organisations.
The ministry spokesperson, Fuad Majali, affirmed the Kingdom’s “absolute rejection and strong “condemnation of Israel’s continued systematic campaign to harass UNRWA and restrict its vital and indispensable role in providing services to Palestinian refugees across its five fields of operation, in accordance with its UN mandate.”
Majali said the Israeli measures target the symbolic role of UNRWA, which underscores the right of Palestinian refugees to return and to compensation under international law, “as part of clear attempts to deprive the Palestinian people of essential rights and services endorsed by the international community and relevant UN resolutions, particularly Resolution 194.”
The spokesperson warned of the “disastrous” repercussions of the illegal Israeli measures against UNRWA and its institutions, which, he said, provide services that cannot be dispensed with or replaced.
He called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities, confront Israeli decisions and practices targeting the agency, and provide the necessary political and financial support to enable it to continue delivering its vital services to Palestinian refugees.
